Autopsia

Our own body is so close to us that we ceased to see it for what it is: an autonomous, highly efficient, organic apparatus. We think we are the body, but actually the body contains us.

Never became this more apparent to me than the day I attended an autopsy of a murdered woman.

As soon as the coroner removed the scalp, opened the skull, cut the nerves and cerebral membrane, and took out the brain, I was shocked into insight. I was gazing into an empty skull. Instantaneously I knew on a deep experiential level who I was, where I was and what I was.

Afterwards, I painted a triptych to document this event.
